The Isenberg School's Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) hosted its Fall Alumni Reception in Boston. This special reception was an incredible opportunity for Alums to hear from the Department Chair Dr. Muzaffer Uysal about departmental news. In addition, HTM Leadership Board Chair Jon Crellin also expressed his gratitude towards these HTM Alums for their continued support towards the Department. This reception was a great evening of networking and reconnecting with over 90 alumni, HTM Faculty and students.
On August 29, at the UMass Club high above Boston Common, David O’Leary ’81 MBA convened the 2018 MBA Keys to Success panel, in which the students learned career-building skills while getting to know each other. Panelists included Michael Fish ’12 MBA/MS, the Associate Project Manager, Golf Balls, at Titleist; Karen Keenan, the current Chief Administrative Officer of State Street (David’s previous position before his retirement); and Kevin Koswick ’85, the director of North American Fleet Lease and Remarketing for Ford Motor Company.
At the 2018 Senior Celebration, Dean Mark Fuller shared a memorable conversation he had with a Fortune 500 CEO who expressed tremendous admiration for Isenberg students. The CEO told him “We sprinkle Isenberg graduates around our organization to show others how to work,” Fuller said at the May 12th celebration at the Mullins Center which held an audience of 1,200 graduating seniors and their 6,500 family members and friends. “That work ethic,” the dean said, “is our DNA, our brand.” At the celebration, each graduate received a commemorative medal and congratulations on stage from their department chair and the dean.
Hosted at the Colonnade Hotel in Boston, the annual Isenberg Business Leadership Awards 2018 was a tremendous success. Isenberg honored former P&G Chairman Edward D. Shirley '78 as its Business Leader of the Year. Also honored was Melcolm Ruffin '13, Associate Manager, Business Operations for the NBA, as the first peer decided Driven Leadership Award winner.
Students in the MBA, MS and PhD programs celebrated their graduation from Isenberg on May 10th and 11th. MBA students participated in the Oath Ceremony, PhD students attend their robing ceremony, and all graduates could walk during UMass Graduate Commencement.
Isenberg Seniors, Faculty and Staff gathered on a bright afternoon to celebrate the class of 2018. The senior gift campaign was on site collecting donations to reach their goal of 75% participation rate to be able to "Dunk the Dean". They came close enough to their goal that Dean Fuller proudly took the seat to be dunked.
Isenberg’s 2018 Spring NYC Alumni Night was held on April 26th at the High Bar Rooftop. Over 120 alums, faculty and students gathered to network and mingle over food and drinks while taking in the spectacular views of the city.
Eight alumni and 26 students received honors and scholarships at the Mark H. McCormack Department of Sport Management’s Annual Awards Banquet in the Campus Center on April 10th, 2018. Award recipients were able to share their experiences, wisdom, and advice with current students during small breakout sessions and when addressing the banquet attendees. Despite their varied career paths they all shared one common piece of advice – build strong relationships.
The Department of Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) held their Annual Awards Dinner on April 4, 2018 at the Boston Park Plaza. This incredible networking event recognized and promoted the HTM Department as well as provided support for the ever-growing hospitality industry. A special congratulations to the honorees.
On Saturday, April 7, the social entrepreneurship club hosted the 2018 Social Innovation Conference for students and the local ecosystem. A variety of speakers and presenters spoke about trends in innovation and how social entrepreneurship is transforming traditional business. Bill Baue, CEO of Reporting 3.0, delivered the opening keynote. Panels were held discussing how the finance industry is addressing impact and the role of technology in social enterprise. Michael Alden, VP of Ascentria, led a Design Thinking Workshop, demonstrating the tools to effectively develop sustainable solutions to social problems. Emily Kawano, Co-Director of Wellspring Cooperative, delivered the closing keynote.
On Thursday, April 5, the Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship awarded $65,000 to three ventures at Innovation Challenge: The Final. Seven student-led ventures pitched to a panel of seven VIP judges. Alexander Smith’s eBiologics won $30,000. Ryan Landis’ Phytos Therapeutics won $20,000. KINASE, Inc. was awarded $15,000.
For over 40 years, students from the Department of Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) have been organizing HTM Career Day. This event brings recruiters from more than 50 companies to meet with hundreds of students and features a central career fair in the Campus Center Auditorium, individual information sessions hosted by recruiting firms, and a lavish reception and networking event for recruiters and senior students, held in HTM's Marriott Center for Hospitality Management.
The Spring 2018 Boston Alumni was held March 29th at the UMass Club. With over 130 alums, faculty, and current students in attendance, it was a fantastic night for making new connections and seeing fellow alumni.
